Mountain Biking at Pogonip Open Space: Trails Through Forest and Meadow

The name "Pogonip," derived from the Shoshone word for "icy fog," reflects the serene beauty of this 640-acre open space nestled between Santa Cruz and the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Pogonip Open Space Preserve offers a combination of redwood forests, open meadows, and seasonal creeks. For mountain bikers, it provides a limited but rewarding trail network, offering scenic routes and essential connectivity to nearby parks and UC Santa Cruz (UCSC).

Adventure Guide to Mountain Biking at Pogonip Open Space

Key Facts:

  • Location: Pogonip Open Space Preserve, adjacent to downtown Santa Cruz and UCSC.
  • Trail Access: Approximately 2.5 miles of trails open to bicycles, including Rincon Connector, Rincon Road, U-Con Trail, and the Emma McCrary Trail.
  • Prohibited Areas: All other trails within Pogonip are off-limits to bicycles.
  • Trail Features: Beginner-friendly sections and moderate fire roads, with connections to UCSC and other regional trail networks.

Trail Highlights:

  • Emma McCrary Trail: This 1.5-mile multi-use trail, designed and built by the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBoSC), is a standout feature. Its smooth, beginner-friendly terrain offers gentle grades, making it perfect for families or those new to mountain biking. It begins near downtown Santa Cruz and climbs steadily into the heart of Pogonip, offering vehicle-free access to UCSC.
  • U-Con Trail: A vital link between Pogonip and UCSC’s upper campus, this trail provides a shaded and steady climb through dense forest, with occasional glimpses of the surrounding hills.
  • Rincon Connector and Rincon Road: These fire roads are open to bikes and serve as connectors between Pogonip, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, and other parts of the Santa Cruz trail network.

Rules and Conservation:

  • Trail Etiquette: Bikes are strictly limited to designated trails. Staying on these paths helps protect the preserve's fragile ecosystems, including rare plants and wildlife.
  • Multi-Use Cooperation: Many trails are shared with hikers and equestrians, so bikers should yield when appropriate and ride responsibly.
  • Conservation Goals: Pogonip's management emphasizes habitat preservation. Cyclists should observe "Leave No Trace" principles to minimize their environmental impact.

Pro Tips for Riders:

  • Plan Ahead: Start with the Emma McCrary Trail to warm up and connect to the rest of Pogonip’s bike-accessible routes.
  • Extend Your Ride: Use U-Con Trail to access UCSC’s Upper Campus or Rincon Road to explore the trails at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
  • Seasonal Conditions: Winter rains can make trails muddy and susceptible to damage; check conditions before heading out.

Mountain biking at Pogonip Open Space Preserve offers an ideal blend of convenience, natural beauty, and sustainable recreation. Whether you’re a beginner or looking for a scenic connection to other Santa Cruz trail systems, Pogonip’s limited but high-quality trails won’t disappoint.

Finally walked one of the trails, it is a beautiful 11 mile area close to the heart of Santa Cruz. The trail we walked was mainly uphill but there are others that are less strenuous. Has mountain bike and horse trails too. The Koi pond is lovely, surrounded by Redwoods in a peaceful setting.

Came because of the good reviews… however it is completely overrun with homeless people. As soon as we got out of the car at the trailhead there’s a man not ten feet away with his junk hanging out. We kept walking and passed 5 more and garbage piling up and tents/tarps all in the trees. Disappointed.

A local treasure of family friendly trails. Both meadow and forest with lots to explore. Highly recommend the loop trail. Don’t miss the hidden koi pond and rock cairns on another visit. Limited parking, but with multiple trailheads (Spring Street, Golf Course Dr, etc.) you can usually find a spot or just hike or bike in. Beware of the prolific poison oak.

Hiked the loop at Pogonip which is an energizing 5 mile hike through redwoods with small brooks and streams, visiting the old clubhouse, lime kilns and of the course visiting the koi point. Breath taking views of the Pacific from the start of the hike. Best hiking location in bay area if you get an opportunity to go.

Pogonip was good enough, but not amazing. Very nice options for trails, some shady trails, some open space trails, some great views, spotted a deer, and some good exercise, but no trail gets a five star from me unless there is something spectacular to see, like a waterfall - and the Lost Boys House is cool, but not spectacular. Besides, when we left, I found a tick crawling on my neck under my ear lobe and then turned around to find 2 more on my dog. We've been on lots of trails around here, and that's by FAR the most ticks I've found. Yuck.
