Fishing at Tampa Bay Flats in Tampa

Tampa Bay Flats is one of Florida’s most rewarding fishing destinations, offering shallow waters teeming with redfish, snook, and spotted seatrout. These flats provide an ideal fishing environment due to their combination of seagrass beds, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines, fostering abundant marine life. Anglers of all skill levels can experience year-round action, making it a prime spot for locals and visitors alike.

Adventure Guide to Fishing at Tampa Bay Flats

Weedon Island Preserve

Located along Tampa Bay’s western shoreline, Weedon Island Preserve is a top destination for inshore fishing. Anglers can find quality redfish and snook in the winding mangrove tunnels and grass flats. The shallow, clear waters make for excellent sight-fishing opportunities. Kayak fishing is particularly popular due to the no-motor zones, ensuring a peaceful and undisturbed fishing experience.

Double Branch Creek Flats

On the northern side of Tampa Bay, the Double Branch Creek area offers some of the best opportunities for targeting gator trout in shallow waters. This area features mudflats and oyster bars, both of which attract baitfish, drawing in trophy-sized game fish. Anglers using live shrimp or artificial paddle-tail lures find great success, especially during early morning or late afternoon bites.

Apollo Beach Grass Flats

Apollo Beach presents anglers with access to expansive seagrass beds, ideal for catching redfish and flounder. The mix of deeper potholes and sandbars creates prime ambush locations for predators. Wading anglers and those fishing from skiffs will find consistent action, particularly during moving tides when fish feed aggressively.

Local Insights

  • Tampa Bay Flats’ diverse ecosystem supports year-round fishing, but fall and spring are peak seasons for trophy redfish and snook.
  • Oyster bars and mangrove edges are prime ambush points for predatory fish.
  • Live bait such as pinfish and shrimp often outperforms artificial lures in these waters.

Visitor Tips

  • Best times: Early mornings and late afternoons provide ideal conditions.
  • What to bring: Polarized sunglasses for spotting fish, sunscreen, and light tackle.
  • Getting there: Weedon Island is about 20 minutes from downtown Tampa by car.

Today was our first trip with Eric Pelno, Tampa Bay Flats Fishing, and we hope to have the opportunity to book Eric again. I have booked other guides and boats in Florida and North Carolina, and I am happy to highly, highly recommend Eric. We were fishing the Anclote area 2 days after hurricane Debby, and the water was extremely cloudy and fish just weren’t interested. Eric used his knowledge and persistence and kept searching areas with prior success, but it seemed to be one of those tough fishing days due to the water conditions. He then took us to try one more area, and we had a blast with redfish and snook. Eric was committed to apply all his extensive experience and knowledge to giving us the best day possible. In addition to Eric’s persistence, knowledge of the area waters and fishing skills, his demeanor was perfect for our family group (father, son and grandson). And his boat just couldn’t be better for inshore fishing throughout the entire Tampa Bay area. Thank you, Eric, for giving us an excellent day in tough conditions right after the hurricane.

I have been fishing with Eric for a few years now. He is my trusted guide when I am entertaining my clients or when I personally want to get out on the water. He is friendly, engages well with my clients, a local expert, and more importantly, always puts us on fish. No matter what time of year, he doesn't disappoint.
