Makahiku Falls Overlook

About 0.5 miles into the trail, hikers reach the Makahiku Falls Overlook, featuring a 200-foot waterfall plunging into a tropical gorge. This viewpoint presents one of the first major scenic rewards of the hike. The nearby Banyan Tree, with its sprawling limbs, is a perfect spot for a quick break.

Bamboo Forest Boardwalk

One of the most mesmerizing sections of the trail is the immense bamboo forest, around the 1-mile mark. A wooden boardwalk guides hikers through an awe-inspiring passage of towering green stalks that create an almost surreal atmosphere. Waimoku Falls

Maybe my favorite hike ever! I’ve hied this trail more than 7 times over the years and it never gets old. When you’ve done this hike and come back to hike it again, you feel a sense of nostalgia as you go about the hike. The waterfalls are wonderful and there are is a beautiful bamboo forest halfway in. Never disappointed.

I’m a big fan of National Parks Services. But here, I forgot my annual pass so took the one week pass, except in Hawaii it’s 3 days, don’t ask me why!? I get in and start the trail that actually starts on the other side of the road. So don’t pay, park a few stop before and walk to the trail, saves you 30$ ! Very different than other parks!

One of a kind hike past the famous banyan tree, through a bamboo forest to a 400ft waterfall. Moderate hike. Took us about 90 mins round trip at a slow pace. What to bring: - sneakers you don’t mind getting muddy - bug spray - water - America the Beautiful National Park Annual Pass ($80)

The Pīpīwai Trail in Maui is an absolute must-do for nature lovers! The hike is a perfect mix of adventure and serenity, taking you through lush rainforests, a magical bamboo forest, and alongside flowing streams. The highlight is the stunning Waimoku Falls at the end—a towering waterfall that feels like something out of a dream. The trail is well-marked and offers plenty of photo-worthy spots along the way. It’s a moderately challenging hike, but every step is worth it for the incredible views and peaceful surroundings. A truly unforgettable experience in Maui!

This is definitely a moderate trail as it’s pretty steep and rocky in parts, although one time I did do it in flip flops…(do not recommend) wear appropriate footwear, can get muddy and slippery if it starts raining. The bamboo forest and waterfalls along the trail are well worth the effort.
