Hiking the Panorama Trail: Glacier Point to Yosemite Valley

The Panorama Trail, stretching approximately 8.5 miles from Glacier Point to Yosemite Valley, is one of Yosemite National Park’s most iconic hikes. Known for its incredible scenic diversity, it showcases towering granite cliffs, vibrant wildflower meadows, and magnificent waterfalls. Beyond the physical beauty, this trail offers hikers the chance to experience some of Yosemite’s most legendary landscapes, linking famous viewpoints and natural landmarks in one unforgettable journey.

Adventure Guide To Hiking the Panorama Trail

  1. Glacier Point: A Perfect Starting Point
Begin your trek at Glacier Point, a panoramic (as the name suggests) overlook offering breathtaking vistas of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the High Sierra. It’s a prime photo opportunity, especially in the early morning when the sun illuminates the valley below. Pro tip: Arrive by shuttle or car early to secure parking, as it’s limited during peak times.

  2. Illilouette Fall
About 2 miles into the hike, you’ll encounter Illilouette Fall, a stunning cascade tucked deep in the canyon. The descent to the Illilouette Creek Bridge offers a shaded respite surrounded by pine-scented forests. This is a peaceful spot for a short break, and during spring or early summer, the waterfall is at its most robust.

  3. Nevada Fall & Vernal Fall
As you continue along the trail, you’ll intersect with the Mist Trail. This section leads to the awe-inspiring Nevada Fall and, shortly after, the smaller but equally mesmerizing Vernal Fall. Be prepared; the steps near Vernal Fall can become extremely slippery due to the waterfall mist, so sturdy, grippy boots are crucial for safety.

Local Insights

The Panorama Trail was constructed to provide the ultimate connection between Glacier Point and Yosemite Valley, offering a diverse sampling of the park’s landscapes. It’s not uncommon to spot mule deer or even black bears along the trail. Keep your distance and observe wildlife responsibly.

Visitor Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: Late spring to early fall, when waterfalls flow fully, and the weather is moderate.
  • What to Bring: At least 2 liters of water, snacks, sunscreen, layered clothing, and sturdy hiking boots.
  • Driving Directions: From Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point is approximately 30 miles by car (about 1 hour). A shuttle may be available during peak seasons.

This is probably the best hiking trail scenery wise in Yosemite. This is a 8.5 mile trail one way either from Yosemite Valley to Glacier point or the other way around. This is still on my bucket list to complete this hike. I did a partial hike from Glacier Point, covered around half of the trail and returned back to Glacier Point. Going down hill from Glacier point is relatively easier. Generally folks do one way hike and arrange a ride on the other end. You can take a bus to Glacier point by parking the car at the valley, do the hike from Glacier Point to the Yosemite Valley. It's one hour ride from valley to Galcier point on the bus. View during the hike is just spectacular, I ended up shooting tons of panoramic shots. As you continue on the hike you will see the back of the half dome.

We hiked the Pohono Trail from Glacier Point to Dewey Point and back. We camped at a beautiful spot right on Dewey Point. The following sights are along this trail: Sentinel Dome, Roosevelt Point, Taft Point, Bridalveil Creek, and Dewey Point. If you can get a backcountry permit to backpack and camp here, I’d highly recommend it. There are spectacular views of the valley most over the way. Sunset and sunrise are majestic from these spots.

This is a fantastic hike. Drop your car in the valley and take the bus to Glacier Point. The hike is long, but 90% downhill. You start out overlooking the valley from Glacier Point, but head away from the valley hiking down past Nevada Falls and Vernal Falls before circling back to the valley. Stunning views throughout the hike. Bring plenty of water on a hot day.

If you start at glacier point, remember you have to do the hard part last. As you plod down the trail you’re gonna know that all this elevation you give up now will have to be earned back later. For experienced hikers in good shape this trail is a breeze but is definitely a challenge for inexperienced hikers. It is an actual hike. Bring water and even emergency supplies should you get lost or injured. Illilouette falls was beautiful and secluded.
