Trail Location and Highlights
The Waterfall Trail begins at the Compton Trailhead, approximately 4 miles north of Ponca along the Buffalo National River. This 2.3-mile out-and-back trail is renowned for its dramatic steep descent that leads to Hemmed-In Hollow, home to a spectacular 209-foot waterfall—the tallest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians. The descent offers hikers unparalleled views of towering bluffs and lush valleys.
Why It's Special
The waterfall is a seasonal feature, most impressive after periods of heavy rainfall when water cascades dramatically into the hollow below. The sound of rushing water accompanied by native bird songs creates a tranquil atmosphere. You’ll also pass smaller rock formations and delicate streams along the route.
Trail Characteristics and Amenities
The trail is rated as difficult due to its steep incline and rocky terrain. It’s essential for hikers to be prepared for the return journey, as the hike back is entirely uphill. There are no water fountains, signage, or restrooms, so plan accordingly.

The trail lies within the Buffalo National River wilderness area, protected for its ecological and historical significance. This is the primary way to hike to Hemmed-in-hollow falls. From the Compton trailhead, the waterfall is about 5.1 miles roundtrip with elevation gain adding up to 1400 ft. Must visit when there are strong rains, since it takes quite a bit of rain to get this waterfall going. Absolute delight to watch this waterfall. Spring is the best time to visit otherwise. There are very pretty wildflowers during early summer on this hike along the trail.

I actually hiked to Hemmed-In-Hollow and it was beautiful even without a lot of water. Then we bushwhacked to Diamond Falls which was also beautiful. Then we took the easy way back to the main trail. The trail was well maintained and easy to follow. We also went down to the stream (not the Buffalo).

Very short easy Trail to get to if you're going to the bottom and that's the best place to view the waterfall actually. Especially since there's not a lot of water right now. There was only one other couple there so it was really nice very low traveled highly recommend

Great trailhead with two main trails. I did both as a loop, going first down to Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls, then taking a connector trail to Sneeds Creek Trail back up to the top. You start at a little over 2,000 ft and hike down to about 900. The trail to HIH is shorter and steeper with an amazing 200+ ft waterfall with a little cave you can sit behind the falls. To do the loop, you can either use the connector trail just up from the spur to HIH or you can go down to the river and connect via the horse trail along the BNR. I recommend doing Sneeds Creek when it's not summer, as it was a bit overgrown, but it is well worth the hike, with many smaller waterfalls, an old abandoned cabin, and refreshing creek crossings. The loop ended up being around 9 miles including the spur to HIH.

Great scenery. Challenging trails. Way away from the hussel and bustle of life. Warning ⚠️ Be sure you are in shape, have plenty of water, and notify someone where and what time you're going hiking. (No pets, horses, or bikes)
