Taking in Fall Colors at Lake of the Clouds

Lake of the Clouds, located in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is one of the premier destinations for fall foliage enthusiasts. Each autumn, this breathtaking spot transforms into a vibrant display of reds, oranges, and yellows as the expansive hardwood forest reflects its colors onto the calm waters of the lake. The panoramic views from Lake of the Clouds Overlook provide an unparalleled vantage to witness the area’s stunning natural autumn beauty, making it a must-visit for nature lovers.

Adventure Guide to Taking in Fall Colors at Lake of the Clouds

  • Lake of the Clouds Overlook: The main draw is the expansive viewing platform that offers a sweeping panorama of the lake and the surrounding forested ridges. The overlook is easily accessible via a short, paved path from the parking lot, making it ideal for visitors of all mobility levels. The vibrant contrast between the calm, reflective lake and the bold hues of autumn is particularly striking in the early morning or late afternoon.

  • Escarpment Trail Hike: For a more immersive experience, traverse the Escarpment Trail, a 4.3-mile stretch that follows the ridgeline above Lake of the Clouds. This moderately challenging trail offers several scenic vantage points along the way, each revealing a new perspective of the lake and the fall foliage below. Comfortable footwear is essential, as sections of the trail can be rocky and uneven.

  • Big Carp River Valley: Descend into the valley below the lake for a different angle on the autumn splendor. The Big Carp River meanders through the densely forested area, and the unique perspective from ground level allows visitors to appreciate the vibrant canopy from below.

Visitor Tips

  • Best time to visit: Late September to early October typically offers peak foliage in this region. Check local fall color reports for updates.
  • What to bring:
    • Layers for the cool fall temperatures.
    • A camera or binoculars for capturing the scenic views.
  • Driving directions: From Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Visitor Center, head west on M-107 for about 10 miles. The parking area for the overlook is clearly marked.

Lake of the Clouds combines accessibility and transformative beauty, making it a quintessential autumn destination.

Very nice to visit, not far from the parking lot. 300 ft walk upwards but do-able. Hiked up with a 30lb baby attached to me so not bad lol. The board walk is also great to walk little longer but more to see! They even put up binoculars for people who have red-green color blindness to enjoy a more vibrant view. I thought it was awesome.

Lake of the Clouds is part of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It's at the end of one of the few roads in the park, M-107. The views are just a short walk from the parking area. It was an ultrasound windy day, but the views were great.
