Visiting Wapama Falls at Hetch Hetchy in Hetch Hetchy Reservoir
Introductory Overview

Cascading nearly 1,000 feet, it provides a breathtaking display of natural beauty and a thrilling stop for those seeking an unforgettable outdoor experience. Often overshadowed by Yosemite Valley’s popular attractions, visiting Wapama Falls offers a quieter, less crowded alternative while still delivering stunning vistas and the opportunity to connect closely with nature. Its accessibility via a relatively moderate hike makes it a great destination for visitors of varying skill levels.
Adventure Guide to Visiting Wapama Falls at Hetch Hetchy
Hike the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir Trail
Begin your adventure at the O'Shaughnessy Dam, where the well-marked trail to Wapama Falls starts. This 5.5-mile round-trip route offers stunning views of the serene reservoir and surrounding cliffs. The trail is moderately challenging with gentle elevation changes, making it suitable for most hikers.
Experience the Footbridge and Waterfall Spray
Arrive at the series of footbridges just below the falls, where you’ll experience the raw power of cascading water up close. During the spring and early summer, snowmelt increases the water flow, creating an awe-inspiring sight and occasional mist. Wear waterproof layers if visiting during high flow periods to enjoy this refreshing experience comfortably.
Wildlife and Plant Observations Along the Way
The trail provides the opportunity to encounter native wildlife like mule deer and a variety of bird species. Keep an eye out for wildflowers such as lupines and Indian paintbrush, especially in late spring, adding vibrant colors to the landscape.

Visited this place on November/15/20 for the third times.
The drive is almost desolate but beautiful in its own way.
Right now the park opens from 8:00am to 5:00pm, I think the COVID-19 has something to do with that too.
7.5 miles out & back, 1,200 feet of elevation gain.
The hike began with a powerful view of the dam and extremely great views of tunnel.
Hetch Hetchy Reservoir itself is so outstanding.
I loved the idea of seeing where my drinking water originated.
It’s also not very crowded place such as the Yosemite Valley.
It is an amazing place for photography and the views are magnificent.
Highly recommend for those who want beautiful scenery and few people!

We did the hike to the falls yesterday after a couple of days at Yosemite valley and other popular Yosemite spots…but the views here did not disappoint and were equally majestic! From the sparkling clear water of the reservoir, the granite domes/rocks, multiple footbridges, the tunnel, the waterfall…this hike was quite amazing!
PS: I did spot a snake on the trail (see video attached), so pls be careful and keep an eye out just in case!

Started this hike with the whole family, 6 of us, ages 62, 39, 37, 34, 9 and 6. It was extremely hot and we couldn’t get the 6 year old to drink water so she and the 39 and 37 year old turned around. It was good thing because the trail got hotter, less shade. The rest of us, after deliberation, crossed the first waterfall and continued to see the rest. It was so much fun and my nephew (9) said it was his favorite part of the trip! He did spot the rattlesnake but it only made his hike better! Be observant and take water!!

It’s easy and worth the hike. Remember to bring umbrella or raincoat just in case of rain. Better wear hiking shoe to avoid slippery rock during rainy weather.

One of easiest and best hikes in Yosemite NP. 5 miles round hike from parking lot with minimal elevation change. Best visited in spring. Hike includes walk over dam, pass through a tunnel, walk on granite clips and walk under waterfall mist.
Parking lot is large enough and busy weekend we could get parking.
In spring when passing over water falls it's fun to get drenched by mist. Be prepared for that.
See pics for the beauty of place.
