Adventure Guide To Spotting Dolphins and Manta Rays While Boating in Golfo Dulce
Puerto Jiménez Dolphin Tours
Located on the northern shore of Golfo Dulce, this town provides access to expert-led dolphin tours. These excursions often visit areas where bottlenose dolphins are frequently sighted, such as the calm shallows along the coast. The guides' extensive knowledge of local waters helps ensure reliable dolphin sightings, often accompanied by playful displays as the animals interact with the boats.
Piedras Blancas Marine Zone
This section of the fjord is known for its deeper waters, which are perfect for spotting manta rays. These gentle giants glide gracefully through the water, often visible beneath the surface. Visitors may observe them feeding on plankton or leaping spectacularly into the air. Quiet motorized boats or sailboats are often recommended to maximize sightings without disturbing the wildlife.
Golfito Bay Morning Tours
Departing from Golfito, another popular location, morning tours offer the best light and visibility for marine observations. Spinner dolphins are active at this time, frequently approaching boats in groups. The stillness of the early hours enhances the chances of seeing both dolphins and manta rays up close.
Local Insights
Golfo Dulce is one of only four tropical fjords in the world, creating unique conditions that attract both resident dolphin pods and migratory manta rays.
The giant manta ray population benefits from the nutrient-rich waters, critical for supporting their diet of plankton.
Respect marine life by maintaining a safe distance and opting for eco-friendly operators.

This area with the Corcovado National Park is considered one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. Getting there from the capital San Jose, is a 10 hour bus ride. However, bussing through the cloud forest and into the valleys, observing species specific to a small area is magical. Even though I stood for hours and the bus attendant tried to rip me off, I still marveled. Lodging around the park isn't cheap, with lots of "eco-resorts" charging as much as $400 / night. Honestly, it's very overpriced, especially with the Howler Monkeys squawking and the 10 million cicadas going night and day. Don't be surprised to be drenched in Cicada or Macaw urine. Don't leave your shoes outside, Tarantulas will claim them and any food left out will be claimed by Ants in hours. Although they claim there may be Whales and Dolphin in the beautiful Golfo Dulce, they're probably not going to be seen. Puerto Jimenez is a real treat, with a wonderful pier where people swim and fish; beautiful tropical fish swim right into your face! Closer to the Pacific, the waves can be very strong and dangerous. Ecology is a national passion in Costa Rica, so expect many excited locals bird watching.

Great nice quiet place. Quiet a drive from the capital but there is a small airfield in Puerto Jiménez. Amazing nature, wildlife... Beaches of Dulce are nice, water a tad too warm at time. But a shirt drive to Puerto Jiménez beaches will bring you unexpected rewards. Unforgettable.

The retreat is located in a magical terrain ,inside the rainforest, managed by a lovely couple. The hospitality was impeccable, especially the banana bread. Do visit.
